Introduction
Resin crafting can be incredibly rewarding, but almost every maker runs into problems at some point. Sticky resin, bubbles, cloudy finishes or pieces that won’t cure properly are all common challenges when working with epoxy.
The good news is that most resin issues have simple explanations and easy fixes.
In this guide we’ll look at some of the most common epoxy resin problems and how you can prevent them in future projects.

1. Sticky or Soft Resin
One of the most frustrating issues is resin that remains sticky or soft after curing.
Common causes
• Incorrect resin-to-hardener ratio
• Resin not mixed thoroughly
• Cold room temperature
• Resin past its shelf life
How to fix it
Unfortunately sticky resin cannot usually be fully cured after the fact. The best solution is to:
• scrape away the soft layer
• clean the surface
• pour a fresh correctly mixed resin layer
How to prevent it
Always measure resin accurately and mix slowly for at least 2–3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of your mixing cup.
2. Bubbles in Resin
Air bubbles are extremely common, especially for beginners.
Why bubbles appear
Bubbles can be introduced when:
• mixing resin too quickly
• pouring resin too fast
• using thicker resin formulas
• working in colder temperatures
How to remove bubbles
Most resin artists use a mini heat gun or craft torch to gently remove surface bubbles.
Passing heat quickly across the surface helps trapped air rise and pop before the resin cures.
3. Cloudy or Milky Resin
Clear epoxy should cure with a glass-like finish, so cloudy resin can be disappointing.
Causes of cloudy resin
• moisture contamination
• excessive mixing
• poor quality pigments
• humidity in the workspace
Prevention tips
To avoid cloudy resin:
• work in a dry environment
• use resin-compatible pigments
• avoid introducing water or moisture into your mixture
4. Resin That Won’t Cure
If resin remains liquid even after several days, curing has likely failed.
Possible causes
• incorrect mixing ratio
• incomplete mixing
• expired resin
• temperatures that are too cold
Most epoxy resins cure best in temperatures around 21–25°C (70–77°F).
Working in a warm, stable environment helps resin cure properly.
5. Uneven Resin Surfaces
Sometimes resin cures with one side thicker than the other.
This usually happens when the work surface is not completely level.
Prevention
Before pouring resin, check your workspace with a spirit level to ensure the surface is flat.
Even a slight tilt can cause resin to slowly flow to one side during curing.
